Known as the "City of Peace" (Friedensstadt) for being one of the negotiation sites for the Peace of Westphalia, which ended the Thirty Years' War in 1648. It features a beautifully restored historic Old Town and is the only major German city located within a nature park (Terra.vita UNESCO Global Geopark). It is also the birthplace of painter Felix Nussbaum and writer Erich Maria Remarque.
